Yikes! We are smack in the middle of November! Do you have your Holiday Specials ready?

What offer do you have for shoppers the day after Thanksgiving? What about the following Monday called “Cyber Monday”? This is when people go to work, login and buy things online for the Christmas season. These holiday specials should be set by now. If not, let’s get you thinking about some great holiday specials for your business.

Gift Certificates – always a great holiday specials tactic. How do you make it work?

Some shoppers don’t have a clue what to give as a present. People purchase Gift Certificates to get out of making another decision. We are pretty inundated with decision making it seems these days. They feel they are giving a gift of “power to choose” to their gift recipient. How do you make it easy to sell Gift Certificates? Offer a buy 3 get one FREE. You can have the FREE one be a small amount that does not have to match what they purchase on the other ones. You can also make sure that this “FREE” offer has a shorter expiration date – especially if you are in the services businesses and prices increase each year. Perhaps a 6 month expiration on the Christmas Freebie Gift Certificate? That is certainly reasonable. Just make sure your printed collateral materials explain how it works and be upfront. Many people who buy more than one Gift Certificate from a store keep the freebie one for themselves!

Any Order of $200 Receives . . .

Another good marketing strategy for holiday specials is to reward your large ticket buyers with a special gift if they spend over $200 or so (pick a number). For instance a local frame shop might offer something like this –

If your total order is over $200 we will give you a “Thank you Gift Certificate of $28” for you to use between February 1st and February 14th! This is one of our Holiday Specials!

Of course you need to reference the details of the offer and limitations or restrictions if there are any. Like they must spent a minimum of $50 to get the $25 off…….just be clear or else people will make you honor something that you did not have spelled out clearly.

Remember:  The objective is to give your customers real holiday specials – not to trick them!

Whisper codes on your Social Media Platforms – a great Holiday Specials approach

Holiday Specials, Whisper Codes and Gift CertificatesA new technique that is starting to be used a bit more is the use of secret “whisper codes” that you announce on your Facebook or Twitter profile. When people come in on THE DAY (maybe Black Friday or that whole weekend actually) they can mention the secret code at checkout and get 15% off or a Free Gift Certificate to come back in January or $10 off or whatever you make it!

Tactics like this are fun, creative and create a certain buzz that could easily turn your ho-hom weekend sales into record breaking sales! As a small business owner you should keep track of what you did last year versus this year in the same time period. Record what you did and see what works best and duplicate these practices. that’s how you stay in business and not just break even. Compare year over year, try new techniques and implement, implement, implement!

Be sure to announce all your specials and whisper codes to your newsletter group! After all they are the people that signed up for all the advance notice on your activities! Give them enough time to plan and come in. Just write a short piece enticing them to visit you for gift purchases. Maybe even have a special day just for your regular customers – a sort of open house – with cider and cookies available for the hungry shoppers.

Make it easy for your holiday specials to push through all the clutter and grab the attention of your customers. Change your home page to reflect holiday happiness and thankfulness they are choosing to shop at your business. Welcome the seasonal shoppers and your regulars and grab as much business as possible during the holidays.
